1960 U-2 incident
occurred during the Cold War on May 1, 1960 (during the presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower) when an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. At first, the United States government denied the plane's purpose and mission, but was forced to admit its role as a covert surveillance aircraft when the Soviet government produced its remains (largely intact) and surviving pilot, Francis Gary Powers. Coming just over two weeks before the scheduled opening of an East-West summit in Paris, the incident was a great embarrassment to the United States and prompted a marked deterioration in its relations with the Soviet Union. U2 spliceosomal RNA
is a small nuclear RNA (snRNA) component of the spliceosome (involved in pre-mRNA splicing). Complementary binding between U2 snRNA (in an area lying towards the 5' end but 3' to hairpin I) and the branchpoint sequence (BPS) of the intron results in the bulging out of an unpaired adenosine, on the BPS, which initiates a nucleophilic attack at the intronic 5' splice site, thus starting the first of two transesterification reactions that mediate splicing.Urotensin-II
(U-II) is a peptide ligand, initially isolated from the neurosecretory system of the Goby fish (Gillichthys mirabilis). For many years it was thought that U-II does not exhibit significant effects in mammalian systems; a view quickly overturned when it was demonstrated that Goby U-II produces slow relaxation of mouse annococygeus muscle, in addition to contraction of rat artery segments. In 1998, the cDNA encoding a U-II precursor was cloned in humans, unequivocally demonstrating its existence in mammalian species.- In 1996, a new U-Bahn contract, known as „30 billion package“ , was completed. For the first time in Europe, an U-Bahn project had to undergo a costly and lengthy environmental impact assessment, as the U2 extension showed a length of more than 10 km (6.2 mi). This expansion phase was, in particular, about:
*U1 extension to Leopoldau
On 19 October 2001, the groundbreaking ceremony for the extension of U1 was held, for which the two districts were waiting for 20 years. After five years of construction, the 4,6 km (2.9 mi) long extension of the U1 was opened on 2 September 2006.
*U2 extension from Schottenring to Stadion
On 12 June 2003, the groundbreaking ceremony took place outside the Stadion. Due to the European Football Championship 2008 in Austria, there was given an enormous pressure to meet the proposed timeframe of the U-Bahn construction work. The Wiener Linien had done it and on 10 May 2008 the U2 extension to the Stadion and up to Aspern was opened.
